THE ARTIST IS ALSO A SWIMMER
In the year 2002 the Olympic swimming halls of Barcelona
arranged an art project, which gave me the possibility to
realize a work that I normally wouldn’t afford. It
resulted in a large-scale (500 x 300 cm) portrait of me
wearing the traditional swimming outfit. The portrait was
made for hanging on the wall, next to the courses.
On the bottom of the picture stays the text: “The
artist is also a swimmer”, which refers to the famous
words by Joseph Beuys “Every man is an artist”.
These words are today quite well established. I wanted to
give them a new perspective: every artist is also a human
being. The swimmer is also a metaphor for the artwork itself,
both for the artist on the art market as well as for the
process of making art.
